The short version
- We ask for your contact details and a VIN (or a HIN for a boat). That is really it.
- We never see or store your card details. Stripe handles that side.
- We do not sell your data, and we do not pass it to advertisers. Ever.
- You can ask us to see, correct or delete your details at any time and we will action it.
1. Who we are
Global Motor Check is operated by Vara Lakshmi LLC. We produce digital vehicle history reports for customers in the United States and Canada, and everything we do runs through our website at www.globalmotorcheck.com.
When this page says "we" or "us", that is who we mean. When it says "you", we mean anyone who visits the site or orders a report. For data protection purposes, Vara Lakshmi LLC is the controller of the personal data described here.
2. What we collect
We only ask for what we actually need to get your report to you. In practice that is:
- Your name, email address and phone number. So we know where to send the finished report and how to reach you if something needs clarifying.
- Your country, ZIP or postal code and address. Entered at checkout, and your billing address as entered on Stripe's payment page. These help confirm that a payment is genuine.
- Vehicle or boat details. Usually a VIN or a boat's HIN, sometimes a license plate or boat registration number as well. This is what the whole report is built from.
- Order and payment references. The order number, the plan, the amount, the time you accepted our terms, and confirmation from Stripe that the payment went through, including the card brand, the last four digits and the results of the card checks.
- Messages. Anything you send us through the contact form, by email, by phone or through live chat.
- Basic technical data. Your IP address, browser and device type, time zone and language. This is standard web information and it mostly helps us spot fraud and fix problems.
Worth saying clearly: we never see your full card number, expiry date or security code. Those go straight to Stripe and are never stored on our systems.
3. How we use it
Your information is used for the following, and nothing beyond it:
- Producing and delivering the vehicle report you ordered (to perform our contract with you).
- Sending order confirmations, delivery emails and replies to support questions.
- Checking that an order is genuine and protecting the site and our customers against fraud, misuse and chargeback fraud (our legitimate interests).
- Understanding which parts of the site people struggle with, so we can improve them.
- Meeting our tax, accounting and legal obligations.
We do not build advertising profiles, and we do not add you to a marketing list because you bought a report.
4. Payments and Stripe
We use Stripe as our payment service provider. When you pay, you enter your card or wallet details on Stripe's own secure page, and Stripe collects and processes them, together with information about your device and connection, to take the payment, to prevent fraud (for example through Stripe Radar) and to meet its legal obligations. Stripe does this as described in the Stripe Privacy Policy.
Stripe shares with us only what we need to run your order and protect it against fraud: confirmation that the payment went through, your name, email, phone and billing address as you entered them, the card brand, the last four digits, the card's country and the result of the card security checks. If you choose to save your details with Stripe's Link service, that is between you and Stripe under Link's own terms.
5. Cookies and tracking
Cookies are small files your browser stores. We use them, and similar browser storage, to keep your order details in place while you move between pages (for example, carrying the VIN from the home page to checkout) and to keep the admin area secure. We do not use advertising cookies.
You can block or delete cookies at any time in your browser settings. If you do, the site will still work, though details you typed may not carry over between pages.
6. Third-party content
Some parts of the site load content from other services. Stripe runs the payment page you are sent to when you pay, and Tawk.to provides our live chat window. Once that content loads, the service behind it can set its own cookies and see your activity there, exactly as if you had visited it directly. Their privacy policies apply to that content, not ours: see the Stripe Privacy Policy and the Tawk.to Privacy Policy.
7. Who we share data with
We do not sell your personal information, and we never share it for marketing. A limited amount of data goes to a small number of providers who help us run the service:
- Payment processor. Stripe, so your payment can be taken securely, checked for fraud and refunded if needed (see "Payments and Stripe" above).
- Vehicle and boat data providers. They receive the VIN, HIN or registration number so the report can be produced. They do not receive your name or contact details.
- Email and hosting providers. These store the site and our order records and get the report into your inbox.
- Live chat. Tawk.to, if you choose to use the chat window.
We may also disclose information where the law requires it, for example in response to a valid legal request from a regulator or court, or to respond to a payment dispute raised with your bank.
8. Where your data is processed
Our service providers, including Stripe, may store and process data in the United States and other countries. If you are in Canada, this means your information may be processed outside Canada and may be accessible to authorities there under local law.
9. How long we keep it
- Order and transaction records are kept for up to seven years, because tax and accounting rules require it.
- Support emails and messages are kept while the query is open and for a reasonable period afterwards, in case you come back to us about it.
- Technical logs are kept for up to 12 months.
- Anonymous website statistics contain nothing that identifies you and may be kept indefinitely.
10. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights. In practice we try to honour them for everyone, wherever they are:
- Access. Ask for a copy of the personal information we hold about you.
- Correction. Ask us to fix anything that is wrong or out of date.
- Deletion. Ask us to erase your details, except where we are legally required to keep a record.
- Objection. Tell us to stop using your data in a particular way.
- Portability. Ask for your data in a format you can take elsewhere.
- Complaint. Complain to the privacy regulator where you live, such as your state attorney general or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
California residents also have the right to know, delete and correct their personal information, and we do not sell or share personal information for cross-context behavioral advertising. Canadian residents have rights of access and correction under PIPEDA and the privacy laws of their province.
Email us and we will respond within 30 days. There is no charge for a reasonable request.
11. How we protect your data
The site runs over an encrypted HTTPS connection, access to customer records is limited to the people who need it, the admin area is password-protected with login limits, and payment handling is left entirely to Stripe, a PCI-DSS Level 1 certified processor. No system on the internet is completely risk-free, but if a breach ever affected your personal data we would tell you and the relevant authority without delay.
12. Children's privacy
Our service is intended for adults. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child has given us their details, contact us and we will delete the record.
13. Changes to this policy
If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and move the "last updated" date at the top. Where a change is significant, we will say so clearly rather than quietly editing a line.
14. Getting in touch
Ask us anything about this policy, or request a copy or deletion of your data, by email, phone or the live chat on our website. A real person reads every message and we normally reply the same working day.
